The Cat Piano

...
Had a wonderful time hanging out with my friends Anique and Briana yesterday. I can't say that we accomplished any grand tasks, but we did eat sandwiches and watch The Cat Piano. It reminds me a great deal of Lackadaisy Cats, both stylistically and thematically, but the two are naturally very different.

Anique helped me flesh out the design for one of my characters, Bernard, who is a gentleman that hails from the Yukon Confederacy and is the Captain of the St. Elmo's Fire. I explained the character and an overview of what he looked like to Anique, and she did a rough sketch which I worked off of to create the sketch at the right.

Thanks again, Anique!

  1. Nice! Bernard has a face. Yay! I'm not sure if I'm digging the pipe though, only because it is scrawny... I imagine Bernard would have a ridiculously cumbersome pipe that only the mandibles of a brusque Russian could handle.

I drew this a while ago, as a design for a were-bear (hehe) if it gives you an idea of how he might translate into my style, sans the beard. I might just adopt yours unless I find a simpler way to do things myself.

Also I'm looking at the hat fer Bernard. What is the significance of the cross?

    Oh yeah, I have a blog. :D

  2. Well... I sat down and tried to "simplify" and this happened: character sketches

Agh. But how do you like the big pipe?

  3. "Also I'm looking at the hat fer Bernard. What is the significance of the cross?"

I wanted there to be some sort of decoration on the hat, but I wasn't sure of what to put on there as of yet. So I put a simplified Union Jack as a nod to the book "Fitzpatrick's War" where I got the inspiration for the Yukon Confederacy. Although, that's where the similarities end. [Both countries are militaristic and quite conservative, but they have vastly different histories and social roles.]

I'm trying to develop a logo for the St. Elmo's Fire, or perhaps the logo for wherever Bernard served prior to his captainship.

"But how do you like the big pipe?"

I love the big pipe, in fact I think that he may have a collection depending on the occasion. Special occasions would definitely warrant a ridiculously cumbersome pipe.

I think I'm going to have to figure out a way to refine his hat design so it still retains it's stiff square-like form, but without making him look like a truck driver [maybe I'll look into Confederate style hats.] I absolutely adore your sketch of him, but he is too similar in appearance to Joe Jack from King of the Hill at the present. "I'm just an airship pilot, honey."

Olivia looks adorable, by the way.

  4. I was wondering why he looked so familiar. Oh dear... I thought he looked somewhat like Andrew Noel's dad, too. But at least he was a sailor. That's getting closer...
